Chunky's Burgers

Chunky's Burgers
San Antonio, TX
Texas Kicker & Hickory Burger
(Texas Kicker) Homemade Queso, Bacon, Bottle Caps, on Texas Toast. (Hickory Burger) Tangy BBQ Sauce, Onion Rings, Cheese, and Bacon
(Texas Kicker) $7.19 (Hickory Burger) $7.59

On my recent trip to San Antonio, I made sure to go to a burger place that I was familiar with from YEARS and years. ago. Chunky's Burgers for anyone who doesn't know, was a burger place that was featured on Man vs. Food for having one of the hottest burgers in country called "The Four Horsemen". The Four Horsemen burger has 4 different spice qualities on it being: Jalapeno and Serrano peppers, Habanero sauce,, and the Ghost (Jolokia) pepper. It is crazy hot, and while I myself would never eat it, I had two roommates who attempted it years ago and got physically sick doing it, it was funny as I was there enjoying my nice cheeseburger, but I digress, that's not why we are here. This time, when I hit Chunky's, I was looking for their most popular burgers.
The first burger I had was the the Texas Kicker, from the description sounded AMAZING, but I was a little let down when it arrived. The first thing I noticed was how dried out my meat was, it was as if my burger was maybe finished first and was left out while the other food in our order was cooked, so I was a little disappointed going into the burger. The Queso, which was one of the things I was excited for ended up being a small dollop of very hard yellow cheese, when I was expecting some creaming liquid queso. The bacon was under cooked but still surprisingly had very good flavor, so I can't knock it on that. The Texas Bottle caps were their name for fried jalapenos and they were the best part of the burger, they were front and center as the main attraction of the burger and every bite had a little kick and flavor to it because of them. I whole hardheartedly think they alone saved this burger from a below average score. Overall the burger was good, but would have been better if some of the ingredients were presented and made a little differently.
The second burger I had was the Hickory Burger which was by far and away the better burger of the duo. First and foremost, the BBQ sauce was incredible! It was very spicy but contained so much flavor that I couldn't get enough of it on every bite. The meat was a little better on this one as if my theory was correct and it was cooked after the first burger so it was less dried out. The bacon was the same as the first burger, and the cheese was just a slice of cheese that didn't really do much for the burger but add a little bit of different flavor to it. The onion rings were a nice touch, but they didn't hold a candle to the Texas Bottle Caps from the first burger. When it came down to the end, this burger held up a little better than the first just because of the freshness I think.

VERDICT:  (Texas Kicker) 3 out of 5 Stars.
VERDICT:  (Hickory) 3.5 out of 5 Stars.

And so the Chase continues…

The Dugout

The Dugout Texarkana, Arkansas Double Header & The Slugger Double Header-2 Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Single Patty The Slugger-Single with Cheddar Cheese, Grilled Pineapple, Bang Bang Sauce, served on a White Bun $8.99 (Double Header), $6.29 (The Slugger) Over the past few weeks, I have been very busy with work and then on vacation road tripping to Nashville, Tennessee. So naturally on this road trip I had to get some burgers, and I decided to get multiple burgers at each stop to make up for all the weeks that I missed. The first burger I tried was the Double Header. In the easiest way to describe it, this was a burger patty smashed between 2 grilled cheese sandwiches. Now this doesn't seem like the most creative burger in the world, but it was FUN burger. And it was REALLY good. The Dugout is a hidden gem in Texarkana, their burgers are great! Now while I would love to give this burger a lot of points, I have to take into consideratio...

Walden War-Tejas Cafe

Tejas Cafe (Mariel's Deli) & (Walden Market) Montgomery, TX Tejas Burger Cheese, Jalapenos, Onions, Cilanto & Chipotle Mayo on a Jalapeno Bun (with Ketchup at Tejas Cafe Walden Market) $7 For this week, I had a friend recommend me a place to go but when looking up the place, I found that there were two of the same name on the same road and when I couldn't get a hold of said friend, I had a very tough decision to make. I either tried one and hoped it was the right one, or I TRY THEM BOTH. I got both, and therefore we have the War on Walden Road between the Two Tejas Cafes. Now both Tejas Cafes are within Shell gast stations on Walden road, one in the Shell that has "Mariel's Deli" and one that has "Walden Market". Before I start, I can tell there is some skepticism, "You want me to eat gas station food?" Trust me, I had THE SAME THOUGHT before I was led to this place, but holy shit was I wrong. THIS PLACE IS GREAT. Ri...

Lord's Kitchen

Lord's Kitchen San Antonio, TX 1/2 lb Cheeseburger Cheese, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Onion $10.25 I usually love my trips out of town because I get to go to a burger place that I don't have access to on a daily basis within my local area, but instead I was left with a severe feeling of disappointment on my drive home after eating a burger from the Lord's Kitchen. I opted to go with a regular cheeseburger because I wanted a full meal of fries and a drink and looking back now, I should maybe have gotten a specialty burger instead. The toppings that came on this burger were all the average things that you would expect from a burger place and it didn't taste like they were high quality, now they did not taste like they were of bad quality, just an average kind of taste. The meat, which I feel like should be the thing that you should take pride on, was bland. It honestly tasted to me like a burger that one may find at a drive thru like Burger King or Wend...
