Living in Texas, it is only natural that I at some point go to Whataburger. Whataburger almost has a cult like following among most Texans, and while I'm not saying that it's got bad food, I think some people OVER hype the burgers here.
When deciding on what to eat, the most popular burger that most people will tell you to go with at Whataburger is the Patty Melt, and to give Whataburger credit, that IS their best thing since the A1 Thick and Hearty is no longer there.
The Patty Melt is of course served on toast, which tastes amazing being thrown on to the same grill they grill the meat on so it sucks up so much grease and flavor that the bread is one of the best parts of the whole burger. Moving on to the toppings, the grilled onions are so-so, they're basic fast food quality. The slices of Monterrey Jack are similar to the onions in a sense that they're not dazzling any taste buds and it didn't help that this time it seemed like the meat didn't cook very long as it was not melty at all, which I would have preferred.. The Creamy Pepper Sauce is the interesting addition to the burger that while most people might adore, I honestly was not a fan of. The sauce to me didn't have ANY spiciness to it, which when you are a Pepper Sauce, you probably should, and it lacked a little in flavor. When we get down to the meat, it's an alright burger, I do loved how juicy and greasy the meat was, but it didn't have much seasoning and it was not a very large patty. Now for the burger itself, it is TWO patties, the burger itself is very filling and you won't be disappointed in the meal itself, but as far as comparing this burger to some of the burgers I have come across in my travels, it's hard to say it stands out as one of the best.
In one parting statement, I would like to let all the non-Texans know, that Whataburger is definitively a place that needs to be tried when in Texas, or once it becomes nationwide now that it is owned by a bank in Chicago.

VERDICT: 3 out of 5 Stars.
And so the Chase continues…
